AI visibility is not a ranking — and your analytics can’t see it

When an assistant answers “which company should I choose”, the decision happens before any click. Rank trackers and GA4 never record that moment.

The click that never happens

Ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overview to recommend a provider and you get a short list — three or four names, sometimes with links, often without. If a competitor is on that list and you are not, the buyer forms a shortlist before visiting anyone’s site. There is no session, no referrer, no event. Your analytics show nothing missing because nothing arrived.

That is the blind spot: rankings measure where a page sits in a list of ten blue links; AI visibility measures whether the model names you at all in the answer it synthesises. They are different questions, and a strong ranking does not guarantee a mention.

Why a rank tracker can’t answer it

A rank tracker checks a position. An AI answer is generated — it varies by phrasing, by session, by which sources the model pulled that day. The only honest way to know if you are in it is to ask the same real questions your buyers ask, across the assistants they use, and count how often your brand is mentioned and cited.

That count is a sample, not a verdict. One check is one draw; the signal is the rate over many prompts and repeats, with the sample size shown next to it.

What to measure instead

Mention rate (does the answer name you), citation rate (does it link your domain), share of voice against the competitors it does name, and the exact prompts where a rival is cited and you are absent. That last list is the actionable one — it is a content to-do list, not a vanity percentage.
